[tip]Hi, my name is Ross and I am a first time guest poster here on Gnoted. I am a web site designer / developer and run my own blog over at http://rossholdway.com. I am in to all things tech based and thought that today, as it is my first post, I would write about a neat piece of software that I found on the web and now frequently use.[/tip]
Do you want to find that one video converter that’s compatible with practically every video format out there, and most importantly, is free? Well now you don’t have to, because I have a great app for you, and it goes by the name of MPEG Streamclip.
MPEG Streamclip is a brilliant bit of software that lets you convert, edit, play, stream and download (e.g. YouTube) videos. Another great plus is the fact that this software has been released for both both Mac and Windows with the possibility of Linux compatibility when run through WINE (translation layer program, capable of running Windows applications on Linux).
MPEG Streamclip supports the following file types: MPEG, VOB, PS, M2P, MOD, VRO, DAT, MOV, DV, AVI, MP4, TS, M2T, MMV, REC, VID, AVR, M2V, M1V, MPV, AIFF, M1A, MP2, MPA, AC3.
As you can see, a lot for a small program! It can also create muxed or demuxed files too. Streamclip has a basic GUI (graphical user interface) and runs well from what I have seen. The editing capabilities, although basic are good enough to allow a simple bit of video trimming here and there and the software gives a wide array of options when exporting a video to another format.
However as with any brilliant sounding piece of software there are a few, tiny downsides. First you will need Quicktime installed on your computer, although that’s not that bad, is it? Secondly for MPEG-2 (e.g. VOB file) playback and conversion you will need the QuickTime MPEG-2 Playback Component which, annoyingly, will cost you $19.99 or £15.01 from the Apple store.
Apart from that though, I would defiantly recommend MPEG Streamclip to use as your video converter. It does exactly what it was made for, and it does it well!
It’s a powerful free video converter, player, editor for Mac and Windows.
It can play many movie files, not only MPEGs;
It can convert MPEG files between muxed/demuxed formats for authoring;
It can encode movies to many formats, including iPod;
It can cut, trim and join movies.
MPEG Streamclip can also download videos from YouTube and Google by entering the page URL.
