Microsoft has released their newest version of Silverlight plugin for internet browsers, version 3.0 with slogan “See the Light”.
Microsoft Silverlight is a programmable web browser plugin that enables features such as animation, vector graphics and audio-video playback that characterizes rich Internet applications. It is similar to Adobe Flash plugin for browsers. It’s a browser plug-in that works with Mac OS, Windows, Linux, and some mobile devices. It’s free, it’s only 4MB, and installs pretty fast (approx. 20 seconds).
Why do you need Mcrosoft Silverlight? This question is being asked so many times, and I think that’s with reason. Just like you need Adobe Flash player to view flash elements on web pages, same way you need Silverlight to be able to see internet applications that were created for Silverlight.
For example, if you go to this page, without installed plugin you can’t see some of it’s elements that were intended to be viewed with Microsoft Silverlight browser plugin enabled.
This plugin is not used across the web as much as Adobe Flash Player plugin but you might stumble upon a page that needs this installed in order to be fully experienced. So there is nothing bad if you install it now and don’t need to worry later, whenever you might need it…
Microosft Silverlight 3.0 works on Internet Explorer (versions 7 and 8), Safari (versions 3 and 4, but only on Mac OS) and Mozilla Firefox (versions 2 and above).
So all you need to do is to:
Make sure you are running a compatible Windows operating system and browser and that you have uninstalled any previous version of this plugin.
For Mozilla Firefox users:
Save Silverlight.exe to your hard disk. Once the download is finished, click Open. The installation starts.
For Windows Internet Explorer users:
The browser will prompt you to either run or save the installation file (Silverlight.exe). Click Run to start the download. When the download is finished, the browser prompts you again to run the installer. Click Run to start the installation. Note that you must have sufficient administrative privileges to install Silverlight.
If you are running Windows 7 or Windows Vista operating system, you will be prompted for security permissions. To continue, you need to approve.
